Kids Miniature Treasure Hunt

My daughter's Girls Scout Troop made this craft and the girls loved it.

Start with a clean, dry mayonaise jar. Collect little items such as a coin, paperclip, button, rubber band, pencil top eraser, pom poms, feather, beads, legos, Barbie doll shoes, pen cap, sequins, earring, safety pin, small rock, small twig, acorn etc...

Create a label by making a list on the computer of items that you collected. Add a heading to the list "Mini Treasue Hunt Items". Be sure to make the print the correct size so that when you print it the list it is slightly smaller than the mayonaise jar. You may want to consider a color theme and set your font color accordingly. Punch a hole into the top of your label and add a themed color ribbon. Be sure the ribbon is slightly longer than the diameter of the jar.

Take the lid of the jar and color/paint it or cover it with material.

Put the trinkets you collected into the bottom of the jar.

Add theme colored sand to the jar about 3/4 of the way full. You need to leave enough room for the treasures to be revealed. ( Note: You can opt to use small pasta or rice instead of sand. In addition, you can dye the rice/pasta using food coloring. If you opt to dye it you will need to add a couple tablespoons of alcohol to a few drops of food coloring, add the rice/pasta and put it in a plastic Ziploc baggie. Make sure all of the rice is coated nicely, set it aside for an hour or two and then spread it out on a cookie sheet to dry.)

Add a small amount of glue to the edge of the jar and secure the lid. Make sure it is properly sealed to avoid a mess.

Tie the ribbon from the label around the jar.

Next step is to give it to the kids and have them spin or shake the jar to find all of the items on their list. Make it more fun by setting a timer and they have to find the items before the timer goes off.

ENJOY!!
