Kids love to help with the garden so why
make it only a summer project? This miniature garden is a
great craft and it is something that will keep the kids busy in
the winter months. I did this with my
daughter's Girls Scout Troop and the girls really enjoyed it.
Construction Paper or Wrapping Paper
Sheet of heavy sandpaper
Items to decorate can
Packages of seeds: Parsley, Chives, Dill, Basil
(Note: only a few seeds per can will be needed)
Start with a clean, dry coffee can. An adult must
use sandpaper to remove any sharp or rough edges on the can.
Remove the label and then cover the can with solid color
construction paper, or wrapping paper. Decorate the
outside of the can using markers, puff paint or by gluing items
(pompoms, foam pieces, beads sequins etc...) to personalize.
Create a label by printing
the name of the herb horizontally on the popsicle stick.
Once the masterpiece is
dry add a layer of stones to the bottom and fill with potting
soil 3/4 full. Be sure to pat down the soil so that it is
filled properly. Press a seed or two into the dirt and
then add the label so that you know which herb is planted in
that spot. Once your seeds are planted add another layer
Lightly water on a regular
basis and put in a bright, sunny location. You should see
the herbs begin to grow in about 10 days.
