Kids Craft - Olympic Torch

How to Make an Olympic Torch

Directions to make a really cool Olympic torch that lights up.  My kids and I made this when we participated in the Relay for LIfe.  The theme was the Olympics and each team needed a torch.  Give it a try your kids will love it.

Directions to make an Olympic Torch

Materials Needed:

1 liter Coke bottle rinsed with label removed

1 LED tealight  (this can be purchased at your local craft store)

Empty paper towel tube

Scissors

Glue

Construction paper in desired theme colors as well as a sheet of red, orange and white.

Electrical tape to match color of construction paper

Ribbons, self-adhesive letters or anything else to use for decoration make sure it is in theme colors.

Step One  Create Chalice

Cut the Coke bottle in half at the bottom of the label.  Start at the top of the bottle and make 8 even cuts down the sides of the bottle.  Stop one finger-width before the label indent.  Use the scissor to round off the top of each of the 8 tabs you just cut.  Firmly curl the top of each tab outward and down toward the bottle.

Step Two Create Handle

Cover the paper towel tube by tightly wrapping it with the construction paper and securing it with glue. Decorate it with ribbon, words etc...

Fit the handle into the bottom of your chalice and tape it in place with electrical tape.

Step Three Create Flame

Get out the red, orange and white construction paper and cut out a flame (See sample below).  Place the flame inside the chalice, they should stay in place or you could use a bit of clear tape to secure them.  Add the LED tealight.  You may want to use a glue dot to secure the light when you are ready to use it.  The switch for the tealight is usually on the bottom so you have to wait to turn it on before you can secure it if desired.  I did not secure my flame or tealight and it worked fine.
