 Create a College Care Package

College is an exciting and important time in your son or daughter's life.  For many it is the first time that they are out on their own and although they do adjust quickly they do miss you as much as you miss them.    So why not spend some time preparing a care package for them?  It will show them how much you care and it will be a great surprise for them to receive a terrific themed basket in the mail.  Below are some ideas of things that you can put together.

First, be creative with what you use to hold all of the goodies.  It will make the package much more fun!

Second, pick a theme to help with purchases and decorations.

  • Movie Mania: Start with a plastic popcorn bowl and customize it using permanent markers or puffy paint.  Then fill the bowl with microwave popcorn, large candy bars, a gift card to the local movie theatre, DVDs and movie magazines.

  • Breakfast in a Basket:  Home made breads, bagels, gourmet jam, canned fruit, small boxes of cereal, granola bars, cereal bars, instant oatmeal, paper products and plastic forks.

  • Beauty Queen: nail polish, polish remover, nail file, hand cream, perfume, brushes, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, contact solution.

  • Cards, Cards, Cards:  Fill a basket with favorite gift cards: WaWa or local grocery stores, clothing stores, Subway, local Chinese or Italian restaurant, Itunes, Starbucks and school store.

  • Mexican Fiesta:  Purchase a large, bright colored basket, Fill with salsa, tortilla chips, cans of chili, gift card to local Mexican restaurant,

  • Ice Cream Lovers: Ice cream scoop, nuts, hot fudge, caramel, M&M's, ice cream cones, maraschino cherries, plastic bowls and spoons, gift card for local supermarket to purchase ice cream.

  • Chocoholic: chocolate covered pretzels, hot chocolate, chocolate chip cookies, Hershey Kisses, chocolate cookies, chocolate muffins.

  • Football Frenzy: Use a football helmet and fill with snacks, dips, game tickets, sports calendar, sports books or magazines.

  • Book Worm:  Books, book store gift cards, magazines, book marker, reading light, crossword puzzle books.

PARENTS CARE PACKAGE EXCHANGE

Once your child graduates from High School it seems that you may loose track of parents that you have become friends with over the years.  So why not gather them all together and do a care package exchange.  Step One: Email parents to see who would like to be involved.  Step Two: Select a date, time and location to meet.  Step Three: Make one person responsible for purchasing the items (i.e. baskets, boxes, stockings etc..), cellophane paper, and ribbon to hold all of the goodies (share this cost).  Step Four: Select a theme and set a dollar amount.  Step Five: Everyone decides on an item or two for the basket and then goes out and purchases enough for each person involved.  For example if there are 6 parents involved then purchase 6 of each item.  Step Six:  Meet at designated place and time to put the baskets together.  Step Seven: Mail them off to your college kids!!!! Step Eight:  Do it on a routine basis.
